Isle of Wight
There is so much more to see and do on the Isle of Wight and Wootton Creek provides the ideal location and is close to the car & passenger ferry ports. Whatever time of year you visit, the Island's beautiful scenery and unique charm will make you want to discover more for yourself. From the earliest times there was a causeway across the creek and this, together with the presence of a mill, was the reason for the growth of the original settlement of Wootton. The group of houses clustered around the Sloop Inn are the oldest in the village and thought to be over 250 years old. In 1865 works were undertaken to improve the causeway and a new road was built bypassing the mill and the Sloop. Today, the wider settlement of Wootton Bridge has crept slowly up either side of the valley away from its origins on the creek. It has become a very popular haunt for leisure yachtsmen, with several creek side businesses supporting a variety of maritime activities. The village also has a number of local shops, a scattering of pubs, a thriving community centre and is also home to the Island's steam railway. Shanklin Chine – step back in time and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this historic gorge, first opened in 1817 and a former home of smugglers, located in the Olde village of Shanklin. Blackgang Chine – set in over 40 acres of spectacular cliff top gardens, you will find a magical mix of fantasy, legend and heritage! Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary – over 200 donkeys and other animals have been rescued and given a permanent home to enjoy the remainder of their lives. The Needles & Needles Pleasure Park – For a breathtaking view of the Needles Rock and Lighthouse and the world famous coloured sand cliffs. Watch the fascinating art of glass blowing at Alum Bay Glass. Historic Island – take a fascinating journey through history exploring any one of the Island's historic properties including Osbourne House at East Cowes, Carisbrooke Castle at Newport or Yarmouth Castle, Yarmouth. Isle of Wight Steam Railway – experience a journey into the past, traveling through beautiful countryside in carriages built in a bygone age pulled by locomotives powered by steam. Waltzing Waters – the world's most elaborate water, light and music production. Dinosaur Farm Museum – in 1992 the island's largest and most spectacular dinosaur was excavated which had lain undisturbed for 120 million years under the farm. Cowes – made famous by the huge ‘Cowes Week’ sailing regatta. Godshill – beautiful olde village full of thatched cottages, tea rooms and shops and is also home to the model Village with its beautiful gardens. iwight.com - the Isle of Wight Council website. islandbreaks.co.uk - the Isle of Wight Tourism Website. hants.gov.uk - Events in Hampshire and the surrounding area |
