Embrace Another British Summer of Sport in Scotland

MuzzaaaaaaaAndy Murray – whose success at Wimbledon is taking hold of both the front and back pages alike – and the recently-retired Chris Hoy – who enjoyed phenomenal success at both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics – are just two of the latest figures in a long line of successful Scottish sporting figures, and testament to a nation with sport very close to heart.

Scotland’s rich sporting traditions also make for great holidays, and there are plenty to choose from.

The 2013 Highland Games officially begin on Saturday 13th July at Loch Lomond and Alva, but don’t worry – if you miss them, you can catch almost forty other games (including the largest event, the Cowal Highland Gathering) taking place between now and the end of September.
Visit the Scottish Highland Games Association (SHGA) for a full list of 2013 fixtures and www.watersidebreaks.com for full listings of holiday cottages and lodges across the Scottish Highlands and Scottish West Coast.

Although the 2013 event has passed, another great Scottish sporting tradition is that of the Melrose Sevens tournament. Rugby Sevens (a fast-paced variant of Rugby Union featuring only seven players on a team) was invented in Melrose in 1883, which makes the tournament one of the most historic sporting events in Scotland.

In previous blog posts, we have written about Scotland as a destination for active holidaymakers – particularly anglers, sailors, walkers and cyclists. Waterside Breaks offer a number of holiday lodges and log cabins in Scotland for more adventurous, hands-on visitors.

Next year, however, all eyes will be on Scotland due to its hosting the Commonwealth Games (in Glasgow) and the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. Waterside Breaks have a number of holiday properties that are ideal for golf fans looking to attend the next Ryder Cup, in Crieff (twenty minutes from Gleneagles) and Stirling (under thirty minutes).
